MRS. MINIVER (1942)
Mrs. Miniver is an American dramatic film of 1942 (Wyler). William Wyler directed the film with Greer Garson as the starring alongside Walter Pidgeon. The film is an adaption of the novel titled Mrs. Miniver written by January Struther in the year 1940. The film is about a middle class English family striving during the Second World War. Mrs. Miniver is an assuming British house wife residing in the rural areas of England. At the time she is confronting a German pilot who has parachuted in her garden; her husband is engaged in Dunkirk evacuation. The director of the movie uses various literary devices such as soliloquy and this he uses through the title character Mrs. Miniver who admires things by herself and answers her own questions. Through this he is able to tell the audience of the affairs of the movie and the intentions of the film (Wyler). The other device used by the director is irony. He uses irony successfully in the story when he is talking about Britain through America. We know that the war is taking place in Britain but the director is addressing America through the British events. Allusion is another device used by the director in the telling of the story. The film is of great significance in American history class because it helps explain how America got involved in WW II.
