Realism and “Real” in the Android World
Developments in robotic technology have reached a level where robots look more human-like than ever. Scientists have created robots that can do most of the activities that people do. Robots are often created with a resemblance between machines and people, but the advance in technology has provided advanced robots that resemble human beings, making people to be concerned about human identity and cultural desires. There is also surging anxiety about the future of human race, considering that robots that resemble people (androids) are taking over the roles that people have often performed. Today, it is common to see robots designed and fitted with human-like flesh performing tasks that humans have been performing. Their faces are also a replica of humans, making it nearly impossible for people to distinguish between an android and the “real” human beings. In advanced countries, androids are already being used to welcome guests and serving them in hotels. While it is true that “real” androids can perform almost every task that real human beings can do, there is a concern on whether androids can be modified to express emotions and cultural desires of real people. In the context of media and film, the goal is to create virtual reality so that the audience cannot tell the difference between what is real and what the replica of the object.
In the video of Rulan Li, the video starts with a background music before a preacher is heard preaching against the reliance on androids. He looks at an android that has been made in resemblance of man and tells it “why do you look at me so demon, I know who you are…You are the one who will destroy Detroit…” (min. 0.2-0.36). This is an anxiety from the religious point of view, but represents the fears that people are developing as the film and media industry is making advancements in creating human-like machines. The preacher is worried that the android is a potential threat to the city, and can easily see it through the android’s eyes.
