Juxtaposition in the Ordinary People Film
Conrad survived the road accident that took the life of his brother Bulk. This event creates the play’s primary concern in the description of an upper-middle-class family suffering disintegration following Buck’s death. However, although Conrad survives the accident, he enters a substantial period of depression following the event. Consequently, he attempts suicide and is forced to see his outpatient psychiatrist for the first time after getting discharged from the hospital for the issue (Guest, 54). Following his conversation with the doctor, Conrad seems anxious and does not even know the desirable help he should acquire from the hospital. For instance, he tells the psychiatrist that maybe he needed a tranquilizer (Guest, 54). While the medication would be perfect for his anxiety and feelings of fear, Conrad is not sure of the idea. Still, he goes ahead to ask the doctor for his opinion. Besides, Conrad is dealing with significant issues like survivors’ guilt and post-traumatic stress. All he needs is intense therapy to eradicate the suicidal thoughts and ensure he can deal with the emotions relating to his brother’s death. It is a matter of accepting the reality for him by crossing from the guilt and the denial that his brother is dead.
The juxtaposition of Bucks’ death and Conrads’ manipulates the audience’s reaction in various ways. It impacts the situation of the play in significant ways as well.
