Module Five
Understanding thematic relationships between movies and their contextual backgrounds are essential for any viewer. It allows him to determine the underlying themes of the piece of art and have a deeper appreciation of what the writer intended. In this article, I would like to determine these themes in Kar-wai's 2000 film entitled In the Mood for Love. Initially, I analyze the general overview of the paper. Accordingly, the subsequent sections would relate these themes to Brunette's paper entitled Wong Kar-Wai. All in all, I believe that by looking at the thematic and contextual backgrounds of the movies, it becomes easier to understand its meanings.
The Film
The film was written and directed by Kar-Wai entitled In the Mood for Love, which focuses on the love story between Mo-wan and Li-Zhen. The film's primary setting was taken from a Shanghainese community within the British's control and a bustling community around the place. Since both characters knew each other and were aroused with the suspicion that their spouses are having an extramarital affair, they sought to determine how the same have happened. Little that they know that it was due to their 'investigative' actions that led them to like each other slowly.
Cultural and Historical Context
