Description:
The purpose of this assignment is to apply the concepts or theories discussed about communication behavior in the course textbook and apply them to specific situations. After viewing Lion decide on the best concepts from various chapters that you think explain the communication patterns and behavior of the main characters.

Your paper should follow a strong organizational format and the adhere to the requirements listed below:
1. Your paper must contain an introduction that identifies and describes the theories, concepts, and ideas from the chapters you will use to analyze the film. It also should contain a justification for why the particular concepts you identified are important to achieving a comprehensive and deep understanding of communication practices in everyday life. (See the structural advice below for more in depth examples of how to construct your introduction).
2. The body of the paper needs to focus on the application of the theoretical concepts within the chapters to the communication and behavior in the Lion. I am not interested in a summary or plot—I’ve seen the film—this is an analysis that shows me you understand how to recognize and apply many of the principles discussed in this course. Set up a mini thesis for each idea, use quotations, and well-stated paraphrasing to provide the evidence. Using examples that include behavioral descriptions and dialogue from the film is the best way to support your point. Offer clear analysis of how this example fits with the concept/idea you are offering. Also, point out why it is important to understand these concepts in communication in everyday life.
3. I will evaluate how well you match up the communication behavior examples from the Lion to the concepts.Try to analyze specific SCENES explaining what concepts from the book apply or explain the communication/confrontation. All examples do not need to come from the same chapter.

ADVICE ON STRUCTURING YOUR PAPER:
First, read the extensive description in the D2L assignment about formatting, length, font, etc above. This paper doesn't specify in the prompt which concepts from the book you are to analyze with examples from the film. You get to pick. But its a bit longer than your previous writing assignment. The key is to edit, edit, edit! Also, you are not writing about your own personal experiences, but instead analyzing the actions of the characters in the film.
Introduction of the paper: Once you know what different subtopics you will be covering (and you should), then you should construct your introduction outlining those concepts. Avoid fluff and overgeneralizing/broad and sweeping claims about communication and interpersonal communication in general. In your introduction, have one introductory/general/broad sentence. Then jump right into previewing the different areas (or subtopics) of communication you will be analyzing the film through (conflict management, listening styles, non verbal behavior, relationship termination strategies, etc). Remember you get to pick your own, so you don't need to stick to the ones I just listed. You should have 3-4 different major areas of interpersonal communication theory you are applying. After you preview which theoretical concepts of interpersonal communication you are analyzing, move on to explain the method you are using to do so (something about analyzing the characters actions and various scenes in the film relevant to the interpersonal communication concepts you choose while unpacking the different components of your concepts from the book). There's a variety of ways to do this. Maybe you're looking at one character exclusively, maybe you are looking at a number of scenes that reflect similar interpersonal themes. The point is to explain that in your introduction and then jump right into the body of your paper working through the subtopics you identified in your introduction.
In the body of your paper analysis: There is no need for special headers inserted in the paper when you change subtopics because you already previewed them in your introduction. Make sure to stick to the formatting! Beware of simply peppering in phrases from the book without contextualizing them. If you are choosing to reference conflict management and mention a character/scene engaged in an act that is an example of conflict avoidance make sure to explain not only what avoidance is, but also if that is an effective strategy. If it is, why is it more effective than other potential strategies outlined? If it's not, you could explain productive ways to manage conflict that are expressed in the book. This is a way to deepen your discussions of concepts of the book. It'll make it easier to hit your page limit and it will demonstrate you fully comprehend the various ins and outs of the broad interpersonal communication component you are describing.
