Introduction
A Place at the Table is a film that was produced in 2012 by Kristi Jacobson and Lori Silverbush with appearances by Chef Tom Colicchio, Raj Patel, and Jeff Bridges. The film highlights hunger in the United States despite the notion that the US is a land of milk and honey, as believed by many. Through the film, directors Kristi Jacobson and Lori Silverbush examined the issue of hunger in the United States of America. This is done from the perspective of largely three people that suffered food insecurity while living in America. In the film, we see a single Philadelphian mother who grew up in poverty. Barbie is seen to be trying to provide a better American living experience to her young ones. We also see a fifth-grader named Rosie, who depends on neighbors and friends to feed hence has trouble feeding. A second-grader named Tremonica from Mississippi also has her asthma and health problems worsened by hunger since her mother cannot afford food (Jacobson, K., & Silverbush, 2015).
Other people affected by hunger also include a police officer whose monthly salary only enables him to buy food for two months and depend on food banks for the rest of the weeks in a month. A Place at the Table shows how hunger presents far-reaching cultural, social, and economic problems in the US and that these problems can be sorted if Americans decide by making sure that healthy and affordable food is available for all (Jacobson, K., & Silverbush, 2015).
The film titled A Place at the Table targets the United States Government and is meant to show the administration how deeply rooted the problem of hunger is in America (Jacobson, K., & Silverbush, 2015). This can help people to devise ways and means of dealing with hunger problems and food insecurity in the country. Another audience that the film targets are illegal immigrants and legal migrants who come to America with the notion that in America, one does not need to work to get food. On the contrary, the cost of living in America is so high that one has to work three or four jobs a day to meet her daily food needs. Next, this film also targets UN affiliate organizations like UNICEF, FAO, and World Health Organization to take action and provide food to the hunger-stricken in the USA.
The main argument, the film A Place at the Table is that hunger has caused cultural, social, and economic problems in the US. But the film reiterates that these problems can be solved if the American government establishes a concerted effort to provide healthy and affordable food for all. After the premiere of the film A Place at the Table, it sparked concern from the government, NGOs, and international organizations that placed a call for documentaries that would highlight food insecurity in the US.
