Beethoven Symphony Analysis
Symphony No. 7 (Beethoven), in A major, Op. 92, is a four-movement symphony composed by Ludwig van Beethoven between the years of 1811 and 1812 while convalescing in Teplice. Symphony No. 7 was first premiered on December 8, 1813, in Vienna. As asserted by Bell, Symphony No. 7 is the “most goose-bump inducing piece that was ever written.”
The opening of Symphony No. 7 begins at minute 1:09, positively proclaiming that a significant amount of this piece will be in “A” major. The introduction is slow and long. There is a standard procession to the first movement. It is almost minimalist. The Allegro begins at minute 1:44. The transition as the Allegro opens is quietly presented as a flute solo. The themes of the exposition elide over each other; the normal stages of the sonata are not covered.
The Allegro suddenly comes to a halt, and at minute 2:29, there is an oboe solo which makes its way to the recapitulation at minute 2:50. Their recapitulation is met with a chromatic bass-line, a droning, with a slight tune superimposed by the fiddles. It starts gently; it progresses to be more capricious and then turns quite aggressive.
The entry of the second theme is at minute 3:43 where the movement shifts into “A” minor. The winds proclaim the harmony with a mono-motivic quality. From the harmony, the piece heads through the string section at minute 4:08. In this section, there is a vibrant organ-like moment in the winds and a light fugue on the main motif. The exposition ends at 5:02 just as it began. I believe that the second theme appeals because it is highly expressive.
The performance does not repeat the exposition because the finale has the highest energy compared to the rest. Here, Beethoven uses sforzando marking. There is an interchange of two elements --orchestration and excursion of keys, even into C major 7:51 – 8:10. There is a considerable distinction between the extreme bass and the extreme treble at minut...
