The Man who Invented Himself by Duane Michals (2013) Movie Review
Duane Michals film titled The man who invented Himself is a documentary based on the life Duane Michals as a poet and photographer. The documentary gives a glimpse of the working methods Mr. Michals throughout his successful career, the great portraits of famous people he took, his inspiration and the impact of his gay life into his artistic work. His childhood in Pennsylvania industrial town is also captured in the documentary. The film devotes a substantial amount of time in Duane’s well composed black and white photographs that are accompanied by handwritten poetic descriptions text on them. Images of people engrossed in stages of dreamlike sensibility are thoroughly depicted in the plot of the film. These photos are pretty fascinating with a dark humor sense embedded in them. Scenes of Michals acting spontaneously in varied settings are presented perfectly along the documentary. A segment of Duane animatedly describing numerous past photographs to a younger man appears in the film as well.
The film is filled with endless scenes of Michals speaking to himself and pointless scenes of Michals play-acting. The film director uses universal themes like desire, love, immortality, and death throughout the entire plot of the film. The combination of handwritten texts to the still images to work out the storytelling is unique to the film. This is the signature storytelling method of Duane.
