I am passionate about making legal and crime drama films based on true stories. After reading the story of Walter McMillian, an African-American man who was wrongly convicted of murdering a white teenage girl and sentenced to death in Alabama, I have become passionate about creating a film that narrates this story. A Harvard law graduate, Bryan Stephenson travels to Alabama to provide pro bono services to prisoners who cannot afford legal representation. His primary aim is to combat social injustices in the criminal justice system that have seen many black people serving jail terms for crimes they did not commit. Stephenson goes to a state prison to meet prisoners awaiting their execution or seeking an appeal. He meets McMillian, a death row inmate who maintains his innocence.
Stevenson reviews his case and finds racial discrimination to be the cause of the conviction. McMillian’s affair with the victim angers the community, forcing her friend and law enforcement to frame the defendant for murder. Years later, it is revealed that racist law enforcement officers and the district attorney overlooked the evidence and coerced witnesses into providing false testimonies. Stevenson and his team successfully appealed the case and launched an investigation. They prove that law enforcement suppressed the evidence and paid or threatened witnesses to lie.
