Misleading Graph-Unemployment Rate under President Obama. Economics

After exploring different types of graphs this week, it is unfortunate to learn that there are sometimes misleading graphs used in the news, politics, medicine, etc. in order to sway a decision or belief. Some items to watch out for in graphs are—
Is there a title that explains what the graph is displaying?
Are numbers on the axis spaced out proportionally or have they been varied to create a dramatic impression?
Is the graph too loud? Does it have too many components that it distracts from content?
Are there sources cited to know where the data came from?

Hello class and Professor,
This is a graph that is trying to show the public that over a million people are receiving welfare. When you look at just the headline, over a million people is a lot of people to be on welfare, especially if you didn't know what it use to be or what it should be. It just sounds outrageous. However, if you take a look at the graph, the starting point for the "Number of Americans" starts out at 94,000,000. That is in 2009 that 94,000,000 americans are on welfare. Yes, it continues to grow, but its only 6,000,000 away from 1 million, which isn't as much as the headlines are making it seem. In order to fix this graph, you could change the headline to something like "We have now passed 94,000,000 Americans on Welfare." Or maybe put on the graph in a bigger font that it starts out at 94,000,000 so people looking at it can easily tell it's not that big of difference, but yes it is growing.

I think the news does this a lot to make people thing something is so bad or so dramatic in order to draw attention to what they want. It persuades people to thinking this are good or bad based on how much they exaggerate or dramatize the news/material. For this particular graph, I'm sure it was to draw people's attention to the welfare problem. While it's good to inform people of said problem, it is misleading and made out to be more of a drastic change than it actually is.
