The Death of Stars
Purpose(s) of Lab
The purpose of this lab was to observe very old stars and their late stages of evolution. It also involved online information gathering on each object such as distance, brightness, mass, age, or other characteristics of each object observed.
Theory
No theory was required for this lab.
Apparatus used in the Lab
The following apparatus were used at the Schiano Observatory in Irvine;
Celestron 14HD telescope with f7 ‘focal reducer’ to increase visibility of dim objects in Irvine.
Maillinicam DS10CTEC camera to record images of the objects within a typical 60 second ‘integration’ time.
A PC and monitor set up to allow viewing of the objects.
The SA 100 diffraction grating to see the spectra of some objects.
A Narrow Emission Line Nebular Filter to increase the contrast (signal to noise ratio) to compensate for light pollution.
Students worked in groups during the observations but the material written in the write-up was unique to every student.
Procedure
Task 1: Professor Schiano aimed the telescope at Globular Star Clusters, Planetary Nebulas, and Supernova Remnants. He announced the names of the objects and provided any information to be included on the Lab Report.
Students noted the name and the time of the observation and any other data such as the sky conditions that are relevant to the observation.
The brightness, color, and position of any stars in the monitor view were noted.
Drew a sketch of what we saw for each object.
Task 2: Professor Schiano sent students pictures taken of the objects through Canvas.
The printed images were not included in the Lab Report. Learners used the image to aide with sketching.
Data
M1 Crab Nebula

NGC 3242 Ghost of Jupiter

NGC 2392 Eskimo Nebula
