Howard Hughes Medical Institute Institute the ELISA (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay
IMMUNOLOGY LAB WORKSHEET
1. What laboratory test can be used to determine whether a patient has an infectious or autoimmune disease?
The ELISA (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay), is used to determine whether individuals have infectious diseases or autoimmune diseases, where the antibodies (part of the immune system) are utilized to determine the cause of the malfunction.
2. What is the overall purpose of this laboratory exercise? What does a positive result indicate?
The aim of the ELISA virtual immunology experiment is to determine whether there is presence of a particular antibody in the patient’s blood sample. If the antibodies are present in some of the patient samples then more experiments are conducted to determine the presence of SLE (in this case lupus the chronic disease linked with ELISA). A positive result indicates that the antibody is present implying that person has encountered a particular disease.
3. The watery fluid of the blood is called
Serum
4. What are the basic steps involved in this immunology virtual lab?
Binding the sample to the support
Adding the primary antibody (which detects the foreign particle)
