MELTING POINT DETERMINATION Name: Grade Course: Tutor’s Name: (7, July 7, 2011) Melting Point Determination Title: melting point determination Purpose: to determine melting of an unknown substance and ensuring that it is identified Experimental: Determining melting point range for re-crystallized acetalide, a 50/50 mixture of pure acetalide, benzoic acid and melting point of unknown substances. Experimental set-up Taking small amount of sample, putting it in the capillary tube, and mounting it on thermometer. Take the temperature at the initial start of melting of the substance. Heat the substance and take the temperature at the final melting of the substance. Repeat this process more than once to come up with a consistence results. Summary of Results SampleMelting Point Range In DegreesAcetanilide 8998Pure 50/50 Mixture Of Acetanilide And Benzoic Acid7894Unknown Substance107110.6Discussion According to the experiment that has been done, the melting range of the substance beginning with acetanilide is greater than 50 c. this means that the substance is not pure. There should be some impurities in the sample. This is evident compared to the pure melting point of a pure acetalide whose melting pint s higher than the one recorded. Impurities lowers the melting point and increases melting point range as can be seen in the experiment. The mixture of acetanilide and benzoic acid has been proved that the melting point range is increased with the melting point further decreased. The unknown substance that was to be identified is pure as the melting point range is not wide. However, it is hard to determine exa...
