The best suitable sampling strategy is simple random sampling. A simple random sample accords every obese patient who appears in the patient database file within the selected hospitals an equal chance of getting picked for the research process. The strategy is also convenient when the sample population is not large, as is the case in this proposed research. Here, the patients meeting the conditions get identified then placed into groups based on gender, and then a random sampling technique is used to pick 100 patients per hospital. Since there are five hospitals where the research is conducted, the total sample size will comprise 500 patients.
Effect of Obesity in USA Obese Patients that Increases their Chance of Developing Diabetes
Obesity increases the chances of developing Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) (CDC, 2020). Primary cilia control insulin secretion (Hughes et al., 2020). However, insulin regulates blood glucose levels. Primary cilia signal the hypothalamus to secrete leptin hormone that controls satiety and controls energy expenditure within the body (Volta et al., 2017). Cilia dysfunction causes ciliopathy diseases such as Nephronophthisis and Leber congenital amaurosis (Volta et al., 2017). These diseases pose the risk of an individual contracting nonsyndromic obesity. Studies suggest that the hypothalamus controls energy metabolism in mammals (Volta et al., 2017). However, the hypothalamus contains neurons, astrocytes, and glial cells containing primary cilia. Since cilia regulate energy expenditure even outside the Central Nervous System, its dysfunction leads to uncoordinated energy expenditure, leading to obesity.
Also, dysfunction in primary cilia activity causes the unregulated secretion of leptin hormone; hence the lack of satiety signaling leads to one over-eating, causing obesity, which can then progress to obesity (Volta et al., 2017). Bisphenol A, an environmental chemical the metabolic breakdown of glucose within the body and insulin secretion, contributes to obesity and diabetes mellitus type 2 (Jeon et al., 2015). Since obesity and diabetes’s causative agent is the same chemical compound in this instance, it suggests a possible link between the two diseases. Also, sleep deprivation overworks the immune system and causes a dysfunction of the normal metabolic process, directly related to ailments, including obesity and diabetes (APA, 2014). Inadequate sleep causes an impairment of the body’s glucose and weight regulation, leading to obesity and, eventually, diabetes. Insufficient sleep causes uncontrolled inflammatory cytokinin levels (Nedeltcheva & Scheer, 2014). However, the imbalance of inflammatory cytokinin links to obesity and diabetes from research (Nedeltcheva & Scheer, 2014). The patients’ glucose tolerance levels will help ensure that the selected patients are not diabetic but just obese.
