Lab Report on Unknown Identification: Microbiology

Lab Report Instructions:

Lab:
You will begin your Unknown Report this week. I will be emailing you out information with your specific unknown organism. It will be the organism that you will work on this week, as well as next week.
This week, you will be working on writing up your paragraphs for the Gram Stain (top page #67), Oxidase (top page #125), and Catalase tests (top page #119).
You'll need to go into your lab manual to reread the information regarding these tests, and follow the instructions and rubric to write a paragraph on them. You may also use your PowerPoints for them as well. You will need to include the purpose of the tests, as well as an explaination of your results.
Keep in mind, that you won't be able to identify your unknown this week, as you don't have enough data. Once you view next week's results, you will then use table 49.2 on (top page # 180-181) to identify your organism. Using your instructions and rubric, you will then write a paragraph identifying your organism, as well as providing information on it.
You will be writing your paper in APA format. Please see the previous email from this weekend. It includes a link on how to write in APA.
Organism #2
You have obtained samples from a patient who is in the ICU at your hospital. You perform the Gram-Stain, catalase, and oxidase, and see the following results:
Gram-Stain
Upon examination under the microscope you view pink colored rods.
Catalase
After incubation, you obtain a colony from your culture, and place it on a slide. You then add hydrogen peroxide, and see bubbles appear.
Oxidase
After incubation of your culture, you obtain a sample with a swab, and you add the oxidase reagent. You do not observe any color change.

Organism #2
You have obtained samples from a patient who is in the ICU at your hospital. You perform the IMViC tests, Starch, and Nitrate tests and see the following results:
IMVIC
Indole: After the addition of Kovac’s Reagent, you see cherry red at the top of the media.
Methyl Red: After the addition of methyl red, your broth immediately turns a red color.
Voges Proskauer: After the addition of VP reagents A and B, your broth does not change color.
Citrate: Following incubation, you observe the your Simmons Citrate slant is green in color.
H2S: You see no black precipitate in your media.
Starch Hydrolysis
Following incubation, you add iodine to your starch agar plate, and do not observe any clearing around the growth of your culture. The plate remained a blue-black color throughout.
Nitrate
Upon incubation of your culture in the nitrate media, you add nitrate reagents A and B, and immediately observe a red color.
