Fossil Remains Lab Report 2: Methodology, Solutions
In this lab, we examine evidence similar to evidence we might find in the fossil record (teeth and bones) and which may provide clues to taxonomic category and behavioral patterns.
You will collect and record data as a group. Discuss your findings with the group in the remaining lab time; however, you must submit an individual and independent report!
Use the charts below for data collection and analysis. Do NOT submit these pages with your final report!
A. GATHERING AND RECORDING DATA
Station 1: Dentition: Here you have 3 example [specimens A, B, and C] of primate dentition. (1) identify and record the dental formula (assume maxilla and mandible are the same if you don’t have both maxilla and mandible); (2) identify and circle the primate group to which each specimen belongs; (3) record observations on tooth structure/shape (e.g., pointed, low and rounded, cusps, flat surface, square or rectangular or spatula shaped, etc.).
Methodology
In this experiment, we studied fossil remains like bones (specifically on fore and hind limbs) and teeth (dentition) that came from three specimens labeled as A, B, and C. The exact goal(s) that we have to achieve are to be able to fill up the table that corresponds to several items which identify the dental formula, observation on tooth structures, measurements on the limbs (both hind and fore), other observations like the width, and the primate group where each specimen belongs to.
Results
Station 1.
Specimen A is definitely belonging to the New World monkey group, characterized by the dental formula of 2.1.3.3 (2 incisors, 1 canine, 3 premolars, and 2 or 3 molars), cusped incisors, shaped canine and premolars, and flat shaped molars. Specimen B is of Human and Ape groups, with 2.1.2.3 (2 incisors, 1 canine, 2 premolars, and 3 molars) dental formula, spatula-shaped incisors, cusped canines, and rectangular premolars and molars. The Specimen C shares similar dental formula wit...
