DO NOT CHOOSE A PIECE, GENRE, MOVIE/TV/VIDEO-GAME WE HAVE LOOKED AT IN CLASS. 1. Using one or more of the protest music case studies as a guide, create your own case study on a protest song of your choosing (500 words). • Be sure to include: • A brief summary of the context. What was being protested, why and by whom? Was there a specific event that caused the song to be written? • An overview of how the lyrics and the musical features relate to the political message and/or contribute to a listening experience that resonates with that message. • Include at least one reference to a specific lyric. • Include at least two references to specific musical features. • Reflect on your personal listening experience - how does the song make you feel? What musical features might be contributing to that? • For extra credit: Create a timeline of political and relevant biographical events leading up to the creation of the song, and its immediate aftermath (up to 5 points). • Reference any outside research, including websites/books/articles where you found basic facts. • Include a YouTube link to your choice of song. 1 2. Using the Grunge Rock and Reggae case studies as guides, briefly analyze a subgenre of your choosing (500 words). • Be sure to include: • One or two exemplary songs or pieces. • One or two musical conventions that are featured in them. • One or two lyrical themes that are featured in them. • An example of an influence from a different sub-genre. • Any non-musical associations made with the genre. • Any relevant social connections between bands/artists/groups. • For extra credit: Draw a diagram outlining those social connections in a manner of your choosing (up to 5 points). • Reference any outside research, including websites/books/articles where you found basic facts. • Include a YouTube link to your choice of song(s). 3. For example, I consider my hair as the only part of my body that I can change anytime whatsoever without people bashing me or seeing me in a certain way. Some lyrics in particular come out unique in the song where she says” This is my prayer that I will die living just as free as my hair.” This is a form of expression that encourages people to live and allow others to live their lives fre...
