Friendship in ‘Holes’ by Louis Sachar
The theme of friendship appears in several ways throughout the work of Louis Sachar ‘Holes.’ First, we meet the tent D boys who have an extraordinary friendship. Their friendship seems very sincere. They are constantly out looking for each other and standing for each other. They find security in staying together even when the environment is not good for them. Each one of them is not selfish and put others before him and this strengthens their friendship. When one of them has done something bad, the others stand with him and they are prepared to stand with their friend at all times.
Stanley and zero also have an extraordinary friendship. The friendship comes as a result of Zero helping Stanley to dig some part of his work. Stanley offers to teach Zero how to write. This is a good friendship whereby the people help each other with their problems. They are also supporting each other with what they know or have. In this case Stanley has reading skills and he offers to pass them on to Zero. On the other hand, Zero can help Stanley with digging his own division. This is a friendship that shows mutual dependability. Secondly, they also show what it takes to have a true friend and helping them in the times of need. When Zero strikes the counsellor with a shovel resisting to dig another hole, he goes to the desert for fear of death in the camp. The desert has bad conditions...
