The city life is marred with quite the element of being lost in the moment as is seen in the poem “Tuesday 9:00 A.M.” by Denver Butson. The poems are a reflection of the miserable life that everyone in the city is living. In the poem Richard Cory, by Edwin Arlington there is the element of coveting others while feeling inferior to them, now knowing what they are going through. What is more important is the fact that nobody is able or even willing to share their story. This is a poem that could have been published yesterday and it will have subtle meaning. People walk around feeling helpless and holding back they feel and what they would want to share with the person next to them. But they would rather be stuck in that state of being afraid.

Water is everywhere
in her mouth and ears
in her eyes
A stream of water runs
steadily from her blouse’
Everyone is stuck in a miserable place that they are too afraid to reach out for assistance. For some it is also the element of arrogance that is holding them back. If only they could share, they could all assist one another and they could be in a better place in their lives. Leading a healthy life that is full of grace and cohesion with those that they meet and interact with. In the two poems, people in the city are busy looking at others and neglecting themselves. They are afraid to embrace themselves because they feel that they are adequate. At the same time they are afraid to ask for assistance. Nobody is perfect in their own right and we all need the support of others; it is only through appreciating self and reaching out that we can make life whole.
The man reading his newspaper is angry at something, but he keeps it to himself. This is the same case with the lady that is drowning. While she want to reach out to the man that is reading the newspaper, she is afraid and choses to remain silent. She is not ready to speak out, as such she waits out until the bus comes along and even then she does not master the courage to do what it ...
