a. Which one of the different ways to interpret the phrase “born of water” in John 3:5 do you hold to and why?
The phrase “born of water” can be interpreted in different ways. For example, one perspective can be that Jesus himself had a water birth and was born of the Spirit. The water birth can signify purity of soul. Hence, the first interpretation can be that Jesus was referring to himself when talking about entering the kingdom of God with his pure soul. A second interpretation can be that Jesus said those words for the whole of mankind. I hold to this interpretation more because I take those words of Jesus as applicable in my life. The interpretation of John 3:5 in this case would mean that Jesus is telling the humanity to be pure and be closer to the Spirit to successfully enter the kingdom of God (Bruner, 2012). Hence, I interpret John 3:5 as a message for mankind to be pure in the hearts (as if cleansed with holy water) in order to meet triumphantly with God or enter His kingdom.
