Processes of thought and learning have evolved consistently evolved through history. Starting from the earliest forms of knowledge dissemination to highly specialized fields that we have today, learning has always tried to achieve one goal – to know and convey knowledge to others. As we look upon history, we could see that these patterns of thinking as well as how we disseminate them, have contributed to society in greater ways that we could imagine. For example, during the Middle ages thought and learning is pretty traits of the clergy since most of the literate population are those people from the church (Van Engen 1986, pg. 3). This led to a monopoly of knowledge that would later be broken down by economic prosperity and availability of academes, among others. In the succeeding sections of this paper, thought and learning during the Middle Ages would be discussed in greater detail.
Learning has existed even before the Middle Ages. Books and ancient tomes which contains the writings of the earliest of scholars had been kept in libraries within monasteries for the use of the clergy. However, during the period of Early Middle Ages, “many classical works of literature were lost” due to barbaric raids and fires (A New Civilization Emerges in Western Europe n.d., p. 4). In response to this, thought and learning during this period would have to come from philosophizing based on words of God, especially because the clergy has the monopoly of knowledge amongst the people.
Political factors during the Middle Ages has also led to the revival of thought processes that originated from the Greeks.
