Review the CDC’s Suicide: Facts at a Glance (2012) or Suicide: Facts at a Glance (2015). Summarize the findings that interest you. Analyze and explain them using sociological terms, concepts, and ideas from the course (textbook and class discussion). Be sure to discuss what is distinctive about a sociological approach to suicide (e.g., how it differs from other approaches). 
It is recommended that you read the blog post below, explore the links, and answer one or more of the questions at the end in your response.
Responses should be at least 250 words and at least three complete paragraphs in length. They will be evaluated on the basis of: 1) presentation of findings and argument; 2) application of course readings and concepts; and 3) organization, writing, and mechanics (See Rubric on back)
Suggested essay format
Paragraph 1: 
• Summary of findings of interest from “Suicide: Facts at a Glance” 2012 or 2015
Explain why these particular statistics are interesting to you, possibly relate to personal experience (e.g., knowing someone, knowing of someone who fits the profile, etc.)
• Discuss what it means to take a “sociological” approach to suicide (and other problems), how it differs from psychological or medical or other “individualistic” understandings of suicide (Read “What is Sociology?” and “What is Sociological Theory?” in your textbook, pp. 5-9)
Discuss Durkheim’s sociological theory of suicide and present some of the findings from his study and/or describe the “risk factors” (social factors that put people at risk of an outcome) and “protective factors” (factors that protect people from certain outcomes).

If you’ve chosen to focus on the findings from 2012, on the higher rate of attempted suicide among Hispanic female high school students, address one or more of the questions below
Why are young Latinas particularly vulnerable to suicidal thoughts and actions? 
Research suggests that Latina teens face universal risk factors plus ones unique to their families and cultures. Speaking from personal experience, Erika Sanchez points to the “stigmatization” of mental illness in Latino communities and “bifurcated identity.” What does she mean by this? 
Does it resonate with you and align with your experience, as a member of the Latino community or as a member of some other community? 
Do you think members of other minority or immigrant communities have similar experiences? Why or why not?
How do these finding relate to Durkheim’s insights?
