HOW PRESIDENT TRUMP’S THOUGHTS ON CLIMATE CHANGE ARE INFLUENCING CURRENT ENVIRONMENTAL POLICIES AND REGULATION

President Donald Trump’s thoughts on climate change are a stark contrast from his predecessor and even the republicans. For instance, Trump announced the rollback on a critical environmental regulation on the emissions of methane on August 2019, which some of the leading oil and gas companies have supported. While these companies backed the regulation to regulate the greenhouse gas, Trump’s administration rejected the idea and some prominent companies supported the decision with some smaller oil producers pushed for the elimination of the regulation. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) decided to side with small oil producing companies depicting the influence of such obscure companies have in Trump’s administration and the effect to slow down climate legislation. While efforts to deal with climate change have been sound in the previous administration, this paper explores how president Trump’s thoughts on climate change are increasingly influencing the current environmental policies and regulations.[Justin, Worland, “Why president Trump cut a methane regulation that even big oil companies wanted to keep. (Times, August 2019). https://time.com/5664392/trump-methane-climate-change/]
Notably, under the leadership of Scott Pruitt, EPA has witnessed a rapid shift in its mandated priorities, practices, and policies, which have controverted with the Obama administration and his past history. Together with Pruitt, Trump’s thoughts have been pro-business governed by the electorate. However, these ideologies are only accomplishing regulatory captures, particularly when regulations are directed away from the public to the regulated industry through the actions and intents of the industries and their associates. While activists and scholars have disparaged the EPA for many years, the ambition, speed, and reach of the Trump’s effort to curb the regulatory work of EPA has exceeded those of its closest pro-business foils such as the George W. Bush and Reagan’s administration. Trump’s decision to roll back environmental regulations has pulled the U.S. out of the Paris climate accord, turned the global warming efforts into a punch line instead of a prognosis and significantly affected climate change. This decision shows how Trump’s thoughts on climate change impact current environmental policies and regulations.[Lindsey, Dillon et al. “Environmental Protection Agency in the early Trump administration: prelude to regulatory capture” American Journal of Public Health, 108(2018), Suppl 2 S89-S94] [Dillon et al. The Trump administration is planning to remove protection from millions of America’s wetlands and streams. This move is feared to harm wildlife and encourage water pollution. This proposal will see fewer waterways requiring permits of pollution, including industrial waste and agricultural runoff. Currently, such prote...
