It can lead to infertility, vaginal infections, HIV, urinary infections, pain during sexual intercourse, pain during menstruation, death of the mother during birth, and death of the infant during birth or death of the child shortly after birth due to the suffered infections (Guardian, 2019). Considering the effects FGM has on girls and other parties associated with them, it is notable that it is not ethical. This can be argued using the ethical theory of utilitarianism. According to this utilitarianism, the made decision is ethical if it maximizes good to the highest number of people (Cahn, 2016).
