On April 20, 2010, there was an oil spill caused by BP Oil Company. The explosion led to serious environmental disasters and adverse effects on residents' livelihoods. 11 workers lost their lives, and four million barrels of light crude oil were released into the Gulf of Mexico. The explosion also impacted beaches, marshes, and 47,000 square miles of the Gulf's surface and claimed the lives of several marine animals, seabirds, and sea turtles (McCall & Pennings, 2012).
