1)...Where are bachata’s origins, what musical traditions did it draw on, and who created bachata?
This genre of Latin music has its roots in the Dominican Republic in the 20th century utilizing their indigenous instruments and African instruments as well. José Manuel Calderón is said to be the first person to record bachata singles in 1962 and thereafter, the numbers for bachata releases soared. This happened after the death of a dictator, Trujillo who ruled for almost 30 years and practicing censorship.

The music was not widely accepted as some people considered it to be vulgar and it lacked airplay in televisions and radios. Changes in the instrumentation and emergence of modern bands made the bachata genre of music mainstream. The slum population that made the music found ways to promote the music informally, in pubs and selling the records in a stall and on the streets making the music so popular that it could not be ignored anymore.
3)....What are the defining features of bachata as a musical style?
Bachata’s music style is unique in its overreliance in guitar as the instrument. A basic song of bachata consists of up to seven instruments that include the bass guitar, lead guitar called Requinto, rhythm guitar called Segunda, electric guitar and an acoustic guitar. To spice things up, percussions such as bongos and güira are crucial in the production.
