Women and Sin
Women are viewed as sinful and corrupt human beings in Buddhist tales. This is because of the belief they are easily drawn to temptations and persuasions stated to them by anyone in the world. Because of this ideology, some authors decided to write a poetry that defines a woman and how a woman can escape the pigeonhole placed on her.
One of the works of literature that decides on a woman’s destiny is the exquisite scroll story, Woman Huang Recites the Diamond Sutra. The woman Huang is a wife to a non-religious and probably sinful husband and a mother to young children. She religiously follows the word of enlightenment and blindly shadow on her husband’s will. However, the time came when her destiny to separate from her family has come and she was placed in a temple guided by the Gods to recite the Diamond Sutra. This event has forbidden her to lie on the bed with her husband and to reproduce children. Moreover, this also precluded her to take care of her children.
Before parting with her family, Woman Huang’s husband enumerated her sins in a dialogue with his wife. The husband told Woman Huang that almost everything that she does is a sin. These include wearing expensive clothes during summer and winter, demanding expensive pairs of embroidered shoes, purchasing pots and other kitchen utensils, making oneself beautiful by rubbing oils and powder, and placing a flower on top of her hairpin. In here, it is evident that a woman becomes sinful in the Buddhist tale because of almost everything that she does. This stigma restricts the Buddhist women from living a plain life without having the desire to fulfill their fantasies and demands. They are treated as wholesome human beings without the right to become holy. All of these are shreds of evidence that contradict Woman Huang’s religious life of following the philosophies of the sutra that she recites day by day.
Woman Huang was forced to kneel in front of the gods in the temple to recite the sutra in the temple of Gods day by day. Because of her fantasm, the King of the underworld, King Yama, was enthused by her words. Due to this, the King sent two guards to extract the Woman Huang.
