Bad geology is one of the leading causes of disasters in slums as the Squatters trade physical safety with being able to acquire a land free from rent and eviction (Davis123). However, such land is mostly remnants and lacks value due to uneven geology and contamination by previous disasters or human activities like mining. Such areas are, therefore, prone to floods and, a good example being the favelas in Brazil. The instability in the land means that loss of life and property damage is always looming.
The third world cities have policies that prioritize financing road transport rather than rails the slum space has gradually been compromised and destroyed to make room for roads in the cities. For instance, China, a country famously known for its biking culture, has seen prioritization to automobiles meaning Beijing has become chaotic with urban poverty and traffic congestion, human and automobiles (Davis 132).
Consequently, most slums have no effective infrastructure to dispose of waste materials and excrement. The shocking bit is that due to the high population, there are quite several children exposed to this waste. For instance, London in the 1830s and early 1840s was condemned to unhygienic living conditions with cholera and typhoid spreading rampantly. (Davis 137) The waste and fecal matter eventually contaminate water sources and clog sewages.
Clogged sewage as a result of the congestion of non-degradable waste means that the population has to find other means to relieve themselves. Women more than men are affected by this because while men can urinate anywhere, women require privacy. In Bangalore, India, poor women can’t afford public latrines, and they have to wait till the evening to relieve themselves or go to marshy grounds infested with snakes and rodents. (Davis 141)
Water contamination is largely due to the dumping of waste materials in water sources, making the slum dwellers prone to inf...
