Ideally, both fiction and non-fiction pieces have the potential to address the issues witnessed in society. The authors are often keen on examining and outlining the effects of the undesirable social and cultural practices that disadvantage some members over others. For instance, authors are keen on addressing factors such as discrimination and inequality where men and women in society are treated differently. Authors also write to address issues such as racism and prejudices and other social injustices that some community members go through. For instance, in the past, authors mainly focused on preconceived social roles where women and women were considered as different in society, and each group has its own socially set roles. This literature focuses on Edna in Kate Chopin’s piece and Hugh in David Sedaris’s work to determine how their roles have been limited and their efforts in pushing against the set boundaries. Kate Chopin was an American comedian and author while David Sedaris is an American composer.
Kate Chopin examines the white perceptions of black inferiority; this is presented through Désirée Valmondé Aubigny, who is mistreated and discriminated against because of her skin color. Although much is unknown about Désirée, she considers herself white because she has a white skin color. However, Désirée husband, Armand, loves her but treats her like a possession than a person and is not convinced that Désirée is white.
