General Instructions: Write a coherent, well-supported, and grammatically-correct essay of between 600 and 750 words on Raymond Chandler’s-  The Big Sleep that answers one of the following interpretive questions in a focused way, including a close reading of a relevant ‘exemplary passage’ that you select yourself. Identify your exemplary passage in a separate line under your essay title (give the page number and the opening and closing phrases, as I did on the instructions for Assignment I).
Below is the passage and focus question I chose for this paper: please follow this passage and the question of focus I have chosen.
Passage - “When you hire a boy” to “keep my mouth shut”. (Pg.212-213) – Raymond Chandler’s – “The Big Sleep” Focus: The Hard- boiled detective lives by his own personal code. What value particular defines Philip Marlowe’s code of honor, and does the novel as a whole support or critique it?  – focus on this for the assignment, using the passage above.
. Citations: Your assignment should reflect your own independent close reading of and thinking about the novel and the passage you choose. Do not use any sources beyond the novel, your class notes, and your brain: that’s all you need to do this assignment well. Quotations from the novel should be followed by parenthetical citations (see “English Essays: Format and Documentation”).
