In The Big Sleep, Philip Marlowe tells General Sternwood his client “When you hire a boy” to “keep my mouth shut”. (Chandler 212-213). Philip Marlowe’s code of honor is based a sense of duty, loyalty and justice, and he sought to unravel mysteries and the truth by using what he had. The detective preferred to work with someone with experience and when working for a client the client’s interests are prioritized unless the client is crooked. Marlowe’s is only concerned with doing what is right and handing over completed to the client and keeping his mouth shut. The detective made his own code of conduct where he believed that breaking the law was at times justifiable to seek justice. Marlowe is not motivated not by money, but rather seeking justice for his clients and believes he is the best man to do this.
Marlowe was loyal to his clients that he knew when to keep his mouth shut and still agreed to work for clients for small pay. The private detective works in a chaotic and corrupt world, and acknowledges he would not work with an inexperienced person, partly because they easy to manipulate and corrupt.
