Patient compliance refers to patient adherence to medical advice and medication, but also extends to active participation in healthcare including leading a healthy lifestyle. Understanding, compliance is important because it influences medical health are choices, and to reduce morbidity and mortality brought about non- adherence (Donna, Falvo 2011)

Identify the health care professionals' role in compliance and give examples of ways in which the health care professional may actually contribute to noncompliance.
Nurses and other health care professionals have a role to facilitate compliance through focusing on education, behavioral and self-management programs. Patient education plays a critical role as this educates patients on the benefits of compliance. Communication and improving patient- nursing relationship facilitates compliance.
Compare compliance and collaboration.
Through compliance, a patient follows a medical practitioner’s recommendations, but collaboration entails following a treatment plan through joint efforts between the patient and health professional. Through collaboration, health professionals can examine their effectiveness in patient education, but this is less likely in compliance. Compare and contrast patient education in the past with that practiced today.
In the past, patient education merely sought to give directions and recommendations, but nowadays, patient education is patient centered and seeks to offer recommendations in a more collaborative manner, especially now that there is access to diverse information some tat may not be helpful.
