Topic: A comparison of the novel “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil” with that of its film version.
Thesis Statement: The film titled “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil” does not provide as adequate details as the novel itself because several changes in the plot were madebefore its production and release (Hughes, 2009).
Supporting Point#1: Written by John Berendt, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil is one of the best-selling novels in the history. It was published in 1994, and its film version was released by Clint Eastwood in 1997 (Hughes, 2009).
Supporting Point#2: The book provides us with a seductive and sublime experience is masterfully written. The author has conceived it brilliantly and amazingly, engaging the readers from the start till the end. However, in the film version of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, several good characters were skipped, and a few of them were combined into composite ones as the filmmaker claimed that they were making no sense otherwise (Hughes, 2009).
Supporting Point#3: Different trials were uniquely combined into a single onscreen trial with an aim to give the film a more lively and interesting look. John Kelso was based on John Berendt, while Williams’ attorney, Sonny Seiler, had played the role of Judge White, one of the presiding judges of the trial (Hughes, 2009).
Supporting Point#4: No marketing was done by John Berendt to attract a large number of people toward his book, but the filmmaker used some mediums to advertise the movie version. Warner Bros. came forward and spent millions of dollars on social media marketing, television advertisements and banners. However, they were given tough times when the world got to know that they had used Jack Leigh's favorite photograph in the movie posters without written permission (Hughes, 2009).
Conclusion: The film has failed to engage people in a way the novel engaged. Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil managed to win the Boeke Prize in 1995. The same year, it emerged as one of the finalists for the Pulitzer Prize, but the film was a box office failure. It received negative reviews from both the audience and critics and could gross only $25 million against a budget of $30 million (Hughes, 2009).
