Desmond Tutu talks of forgiveness as letting go the right of retribution. It is an act of abandoning revenge and any ill feelings against the wrongdoing of someone. Also, it opens up an opportunity door for the wrongdoer to begin afresh and rectify the wrong. It is a way of not allowing any victimization over oneself because of a wrongdoing. Tutu likens forgiveness to the air and the wrongdoer as one inside a house with closed doors and windows. Unless one opens the windows, he can not get access to the air. Like the fresh air, the wrongdoer has to ask for forgiveness to allow it to work effectively.
