In an essay concerning human understanding, Immanuel Kant states that metaphysics is quite possible since it gives a reflection of a sensible world. Firstly, Kant explores the features that are common in other sciences because these characteristics sometimes confuse the nature of science. He continues to reiterate that science is simple and it uses simple objects to enhance cognition. Additionally, science is empirical; thus, it cannot be taken from experience due to science's metaphysical nature. Metaphysics uses similar to mathematics; hence, the two disciplines can be separated; it (metaphysics) can only be evaluated psychologically. Immanuel ant refers to the process of defining metaphysics as "pure reason," which is used to differentiate mathematics and metaphysics.
Kant continues to explain the nature of metaphysics science by synthesizing all the judgments used to define metaphysics from the scientific point of view. Judgments on metaphysics are not viable since they are analytical and do not explore metaphysics components in their entirety. Kant uses the law of contradiction to explain why the judgments on metaphysics are analytical. In this case, science concepts are empirical, and the opposite is accurate, and both cannot be denied through the law of contradiction. Thus, Kant reiterates that all judgments about metaphysics are priori; for example, gold has a distinctive color (yellow), and it would require no experience to determine that.
Kant describes the nature of synthesized judgments since they cannot be explained by the law of contradiction (they are posteriori). He goes ahead to classify these judgments; firstly, according to experience, empirical judgments can be confirmed to be analytical. Contrary, mathematical judgment can be described as synthetical since it can only be understood through the law of contradiction. Notably, Kant emphasizes on judgments that are implied in mathematics, they be must be classified as a priority because they do not require experience. Giving an example, on the sum of two integers (7+5), Kant says the answer is due to the union of two numbers.
Immanuel Kant takes the explanation more in-depth; all principles applied in geometry are analytical. A straight line is defined by quantity rather than quality since it is synthetical. Additionally, the distance of a straight line i...
