Property Crime and Typologies
Property crime involves private property with categories such as car theft, arson, burglary, vandalism, and shoplifting. It involves the theft and destruction of property without any harm to the victim. In the United States, property crime has fallen due to improvements in police work around the issue and security upgrades. However before, more than 120 million property crimes were reported across the US since 2006. It is estimated that one in five households are susceptible to property crime in 2020. This essay is an analysis of a case study involving a form of property crime.
Theft is described as the unlawful process of obtaining another person’s possessions. This is the simplest form of crime whose charges involve finding a person in possession of another person’s belongings. In the cases study, the individuals are engaged in theft by taking more than a dozen pairs of socks without the intention of paying for them. The location and means of theft change the crime dynamics and potentially make the charge more serious. Since they are in a store, theft will be categorized as shoplifting which can carry a hefty penalty than simple theft. Shoplifting involves concealing an item and manipulating the pricing of failure to pay for a product in full.
Bubba Hurt, Skeeter Redrum, Summer Breeze are the main suspects in the case and will be charged with shoplifting with a felony conviction. In Georgia, the law has specific shoplifting regulations, dividing it into two, a felony and misdemeanor. A misdemeanor involves the theft of items worth less than $300, while a felony conviction involves the theft of items worth more than $300 CITATION Ass21 \l 1033 (Library, 2021). Therefore, the three individuals will be charged with misdemeanor shoplifting as the items they took do not amount to $300.
The punishment of a misdemeanor conviction in Georgia involves a maximum of 12 months in jail or a fine of up to $1,000. This punishment will be administered individually between the three suspects, each for their involvement in the crime. If they are charged with a subsequent shoplifting misdemeanor, they will incur an additional penalty of a fine of at least $500 CITATION Reb21 \l 1033 (Pirius, 2021). A subsequent conviction of a shoplifting misdemeanor ensures that the punishment cannot be probated or suspended, and they will have to serve a sentence or pay the fine.
There are apparent differences between theft quality as some people do it professionally while others are only armatures. For the profession, their work involves the lack of moral principle, and fatalities are likely to occur if the theft doesn’t go to plan. With armatures, the damage is nonexistent or often limited to oneself. Professional thieves plan the action by taking actions such as surveilling the place and planning for possible escape routes. Lastly, the incentive between the two crimes is different. Professional thieves can only stop their ways through incarceration or lethal force, while the armature will change based on circumst...
