USS Constitution
USS Constitution is one of six frigates commissioned for construction in 1794 by Congress. more heavily armed and larger than conventional frigates, it operated as the Navy’s capital ships. It was made of resilient live oak, with its planks measuring seven inches thick. Old Ironsides, as it is mostly referred to, was launched in 1798 and rendered her first duty as protection to the American merchant shipping during the Quasi-War.
Constitution received flagship for the Mediterranean squadron in 1803 under Captain Edward Preble. she then served against the Barbary States of North Africa, which were charging ransom from the United States to allow American trader crafts access to the Mediterranean ports.
