How the West Was Won
In the 19th Century, the United States believed that it would expand and move around the continent to spread their civilizations and traditions. In the films, the white men are dominant and were great frontiers that were envied, and the children wanted to emulate. The American shows were frequently aired, occupying almost three-quarters of the prime time films. Currently, the shows do not air anymore as they are considered the unrealistic description of America’s past.
The movie, How The West Was Won, which was aired in 1962, was the ultimate paean to the Manifest Destiny. The video was filmed by three directors using the customary folk track, and the central theme revolved around four American cohorts who trailed their destiny across the American land (Johnson et al., 2004). Four segments that summarized the westward movement were the rivers, plains, civil wars, and the outlaws. The characters depicted tribulations and tragedies they encountered on their journeys, but there was a triumph in the end. The tragedies and eventual triumphs is a heroic description of our past and the hope for a great future.
The Manifest Destiny rose as a result of the United States’ seizure of Texas City and the British clash over Oregon (Johnson et al., 2004). The desire to conquer Oregon and its neighbors became part of the United States union to subdue other countries and spread their traditions, institutions, and democracy. In the current world, the use of Manifest Destiny is seen as a cover-up for greed and conquest, where the Americans could pass freedom and social equality to the less privileged while taking advantage of their situation to fulfill their desires (Carlisle & Golson, 2007).
