The portrait of George Washington became successful in the Early Republic era because it would continue to promote a sense of national purpose to respective parties. The portrait served as a tribute to the first president who had worked tirelessly to ensure that Potomac would be a permanent seat of the federal government. Washington managed to get the Washington city to the point of being a high-esteem of power. For someone who was a symbol of unity, Washington's statue would strengthen the link between the Hero and the Congress. Making a portrait of him would be a nice gesture considering he would not be around forever. For this reason, the monument was to be executed by the best Artist in Europe.
