Discussion 1: Asian Unification As the readings and the weekly introduction show, theologies were crucial in establishing a sense of identity in southern and eastern Asia. In contrast to the later theocracies of the Islamic world or domination of church over state in some periods of history in Medieval Europe, religion in southern and eastern Asia developed on its own and acted to support the state, which also acted to support these religions. For this assignment describe how one Chinese or Indian empire tried to unify their people; what intellectual movement they used (religion or philosophy), how that religion or philosophy promoted state stability, and finally evaluate the impact of the religion/philosophy on the stability of the state. Your empires to select from include: Qin China, Han China, Mauryan India, and Gupta India. Remember just focus on one of the four empires and the religion/philosophy it adopted rather than comparing two or more. I want in-depth examinations for one rather than more shallow examinations for several.
