Spirituality and ethics are usually interchanged when talking about Christianity, but these two though interconnected are not the same. Spirituality focuses more on what is vital to an individual, the things that he values and prioritizes above other things, while ethics are the principles that an individual follow reflecting his character, ideals, and drive that influences his decision-making. In Christianity, God is believed to be the divine being, and Christians follow the teachings and life of His son Jesus Christ. Postmodern relativism, on the other hand, is another perspective where a universal set of beliefs or rules is rejected. For those who believe in postmodern relativism, there is no “one size fits all” for given situations. Concerning healthcare, these concepts differ in the way they approach a situation. From the perspective of Christianity, there are ethical rules preventing harm to the patient or subject, that are as much as possible supported by objective researches backed up by science, still in consideration with the principles and beliefs of good Christian morality. While in postmodern relativism, the uniqueness of an individual’s case is emphasized, and there is always skepticism involved, which has its advantages and disadvantages. This perspective in healthcare concerns many people due to its ability to create fear, highlight the grey areas of science, and spread unproven theories to people, which might affect how patients respond to usual treatments. A very timely example of this is the anti-vaccination campaigns because of claims that it causes autism in children, which in effect decreases the number of children getting vaccinated, making them prone to diseases. Although there are disadvantages, it also causes a stir in the traditional way of handling healthcare, which leads to improvement and change in the system that was once established, further to promote optimal treatment, more options, and safety.
