1. Why is understanding the health care system at the local level important to consider when planning an EBP implementation?
When planning an evidence-based practice implementation, it is important to consider understanding the healthcare system at the local level as this will allow for the implementation of the EBP in such a manner that would result in successful adoption of the EBP at the healthcare organization. Characteristics of the EBP topic that have an effect on adoption include the complexity of the EBP topic; the compatibility of the EBP topic with the work, norms, values and perceived needs of the users; and the relative advantage of the EBP, for instance social prestige, relevance to the task, and effectiveness (Titler, 2015). EBP topics that users perceive as relatively simple are adopted more easily and in less time compared to EBP topics that users see as more complex. Therefore, understanding the healthcare system at the local level will enable one to pick an EBP topic for implementation that can be easily adopted by users.
2. Compare and contrast two change theories, and determine which theory makes the most sense for implementing your specific EBP project. Why? Has your mentor used either theory, and to what result?
Two change theories that can be used to implement the EBP project are Lewin’s 3-Step Model of Change that was developed by Kurt Lewin, and Kotter’s Eight-Step Model of Change which was conceptualized by John Kotter. Lewin’s change theory has three main steps, namely unfreeze, transition, and refreeze. Kotter’s change theory, on the other hand, has 8 steps (Collins, 2017). Of these two, Lewin’s 3-step model of change is the change theory that makes the most sense for implementation of my EBP project. This is because it is more straightforward and easier to use than Kotter’s model. My mentor used Lewin’s change theory and was able to effectively implement her EBP project.
