OVERVIEW
In healthcare, quality improvement has been an integral part of infection control. In addition to surveillance, response, and prevention of infection, quality in care is also highlighted in addressing hospital-acquired infections (HAIs). Healthcare-associated infections do put not only a financial burden on the healthcare system but also cause considerable morbidity and mortality to patients.
According to the Texas Department of State Health Services (n.d.), approximately 650,000 patients in the US develop an infection during their hospital stay, and about 75,000 of them die each year as a result of hospital infections. A survey conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in 2011 showed that there were 722,000 cases of healthcare-associated infections recorded in the US, which means that about 4% of the patients had contracted at least one disease during their hospital stay. The significant categories contributing to>80% of reported healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) include surgical site infection from any inpatient surgery, catheter-associated urinary tract infection, ventilator-associated pneumonia, central line-associated bloodstream infections, and gastrointestinal illness.
Nursing practice is an integral part of improving infection prevention and control. Nurses provide a link that connects their clinical area of expertise and the infection control team in raising awareness regarding infection prevention and control against hospital-acquired infections. Under the supervision of the Texas Army Nursing Department, the purpose of the Nursing Quality Control Plan is to establish, operationalized, and asses action plans for quality improvement that directly involves nursing in infection prevention and control. An organizational quality plan and strategic priorities are integrated into providing direction empowering and enabling the nursing team to incorporate high-quality standards in improving infection prevention and power in the clinical setting. Through the nursing framework, objectives, goals, and strategies, recommendations were established in developing the healthcare quality, which is based in the Institute of Medicine Aims for Improvement in the 21st-century Healthcare System.
PREVIOUS RESEARCH
Utilizing six critical focus areas in a Quality Improvement collaborative, reported vital elements to include the benefits they obtained upon realization of not being alone, and the contribution shared ideas, whether successful or not. Infection Prevention (IP) practices were also recommended to hospitals as an approach that would enable them to generate effective methods in reducing the risk of diseases to patients. It also included the feedback and evaluation of those who participated such as the limitation to a single focus, development of a collective culture of learning and integration of QI skills to be shared among organizations (Adams et al. 2018.)
