Interview with an ER Doctor
Life in the emergency rooms (ER) in movies and television shows seems exciting with all the white walls, medical staff running up and down attending to different cases and the fact that most lives are saved at the end of the day. I was, therefore, looking forward to my trip to the Mount Sinai Hospital emergency room in New York City. I hoped to get more insight into sexual assault and violence victims and survivors. On arrival at the hospital, I was introduced to Dr. Smith, a third-year resident doctor at the ER who would tell me more about the treatment of sexual assault patients. Below is my interview with Dr. Smith.
Me: What can you describe the sexual violence as?
DR. Smith: It is any sexual act that is committed against someone without the person's freely given consent. It is a serious public, health, and human rights issue. It has both short and long-term effects on the victims’ mental, reproductive and sexual health. It can occur within intimate partnerships, larger family contexts, communities or during times of conflict such as wars.
Me: What are some of the types of sexual violence?
DR. Smith: Sexual violence may be: attempted involuntary penetration of a victim; alcohol or drug trigerred penetration; forced acts in which a victim is made to penetrate a perpetrator or someone else and drugs-facilitated acts where a victim is made to penetrate a perpetrator or somebody else. Moreover, uninvited sexual contact, non-contact unwanted sexual encounters as well as non-physically, forced penetration which happens after an individual is pressured verbally or else via intimidation.
Me: I understand that you were responsible for handling the case of Jane Rivers, a woman who was sexually assaulted by her partner. What was your experience dealing with that situation?
DR. Smith: Patients who report a sexual assault are entitled to immediate access to emergency medical care. As medical staff, we are also required to competently collect necessary evidence that can assist in the investigation and prosecution of the incidence. Since the victim, in this case, was female, I followed the guidelines provided and came up with a counseling plan for Jane while addressing the possibility of pregnancy in addition to testing for and treating sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV.
