My Core Values
Universally, values are critical in order to maintain a society’s stability. For millennia, societies have developed numerous sets of values and moral principles to guide collective and individual actions. The importance of values is shown to endure beyond one generation and into whole cultures. The underlying foundations for any society can be said to be informed by a given set of values and principles making possible a society – and, for that matter, a culture – identifiable by unique values adopted by community members. The values societies develop and adopt are passed on to individuals across different subcultural, social, professional and age groups. For many societies, values are not set at stone yet are dynamic manifestations of underlying, guiding principles each society has chosen to survive and excel. The central interest in current essay is, for current purposes, on individual values. In contrast to social values, individual vales, despite informed by wider social values, are adopted differentially by different individuals. I focus, accordingly, in current essay, on four core personal values as representative of a moral universe I have been socialized in, subscribe to and continue to support.
Integrity is a first and central value I have always been encouraged to adopt and uphold. Socialized and raised in a middle class family, hard work has always been emphasized in our family. My dad, a self-made man, has worked hard to create all I have now: a big, comfortable home; great education; amazing summer vacations; and, not least, a happy and loving family. The respect, mom always says, we share in family goes far to a sense of integrity and fairness my father has always had and passed on to us all. To be honest, my father has always emphasized, is to gain everyone’s respect – even people you have differences with. His sense of integrity shows
in almost about everything I say and do. Academically, I make sure I do my best not just to please my parents but, more importantly, to prove my worth. In so doing, I depend on myself and do not get a credit not my own. Personally, I always try to be fair even in play. Today, competition in sports is so fierce many would do anything to win. This is where values should be upheld most.
Loyalty is a second value I cherish and appreciate most. By “loyalty” I do not just mean loyalty as is common in opposite sex relationships or in military service. Instead, loyalty, as I understand what loyalty is, applies to a situations and contexts people should uphold meanings of a strong work ethic, friendship and a common human destiny. At work, a professional can be said to be loyal if he, doing his best, creates value for his workplace ...
