First, an IT auditor is supposed to belong to one or more professional bodies that have been proven to have appropriate standards; for instance, IIA, AICPA, or IFAC are suitable for an IT Auditor. Again, the auditor should be able to demonstrate independence in his/her work so that the reports that are submitted from his/her findings should add value to the organization. Various professional bodies such as the IFAC have addressed the issue of independence in a clear context and language; also, government agencies, and International Organization of Supreme Audit have elucidated on it.
The continuous reassessment of the auditing goals is another requirement of an IT Auditor; he/she should show the ability to stay on track with the audits that last more than two weeks to four weeks. An auditor should understand that he/she occupies a position similar to that of a judge and the reports being submitted are significant to the given organization in that critical decisions will be made from the findings. In this perspective, an IT auditor should have high ethical standards to maintain his/her trust to the clients.
