Music is a presentation of ideas, opinions, or emotions. According to Small (1995), musical performance is an interaction of people, in which ideas, opinion, or emotions are generated. All these human interactions take place in a physical and a social place. Therefore, the physical and social setting of a musical event influences the type of music that is performed there. The ideas and emotions of a society at a particular time are normally expressed through music. Therefore, as events and thoughts of a society changes, the music for that time changes too so as to fit in with what is currently happening. Cultural views and ideas in a society are mostly reflected in the lines or style of the music. The number of events, thoughts, ideas, and emotions in a society are countless, and so is the number of factors influencing the type of music performed in that particular society. When all these factors are put together they create a culture. The type of music and musical performances are meant to embrace, recognize, celebrate, and promote certain cultural aspects.
Music is the expression of culture. A culture that has high value for money and material objects are likely to glorify these items in their music. During times of war or political instabilities in a society, a significant amount of music will be created to promote peace or end the crisis. Some factors in a society are temporary while others can last for decades. Human relationships, interactions, and social values change from time to time.
