The image above is of Amitabha or Amituofo from the Tang dynasty that existed from 618-907. In my opinion, the artwork connects to the teachings of Buddhism, which rotate around meditation and leading a peaceful life without sufferings. Buddha wanted humans to live without pain, and that is the reason why he came up with a religious way of living. Amitabha appears to be seated while crossing his legs and resting his arms on his laps (Metmuseum.org, 2020). The position of his arms shows that he is meditating. In particular, meditation is a process of controlling one’s mind and body to focus on something and gain awareness. The primary aim of this practice is to calm one’s mind and regain internal peace.
