The NBA has done R&D on in-game wearable devices. It announced in 2014 that the NBA Development League would become the first U.S. professional sports league to use wearable devices on players during regular season games. The devices — reportedly from Catapult Sports, STATSports and Zephyr — could generate individual player data on cardiovascular exertion, musculoskeletal intensity, fatigue, rate of acceleration and deceleration, number of jumps, and distance ran and direction. Now, roughly one-third of teams in the league employ wearable technology in games, NBA G-League president Malcolm Turner said last week at SportsBusiness Journal’s Sports Marketing Symposium.

Improvement on NBA Broadcast
The future of NBA broadcasting looks brighter than ever. Adam Silver, current NBA’s commissioner, has mentioned a number of changes in broadcasting that have sparked the interest of many fans. The commissioner stated that NBA broadcasting needs to adopt changes, especially after having looked the same for 30 years (Leung). Silver claims that cable boxes are limited regarding technological advancements, and this makes them less competitive compared to online platforms like Twitch.tv (Barnewall). Because of the limitations in cable TV, NBA is making plans to shift its broadcasts online to give room for R&D investments. Much of the efforts by Silver to invest in R&D and technology are geared towards improving the experience of fans. Currently, there are some online sites that stream live sports. Sites such as Twitch.tv stream both video games and live games as well (Barnewall). The online experience seems to attract a large number of fans, mainly because of the lack of limitations in the technology that can be attracted by these sites, which gives more room for creativity.
Most recently, the NBA, together with the NBA Digital Partnership have developed the NBA League Pass, which was launched at the beginning of the 2018-2019 season (NBA). The NBA League Pass is the first of the many innovative initiatives that are focused on offering a greater experience for the NBA fans. The offering, which is available through the NBA App, the NBA website, and Turner’s live streaming service will enable fans to purchase live NBA games in progress at low costs (NBA). The offering will be advantageous since it is much cheaper than the normal fees for a full game. Fans will be able to purchase either at the beginning of the first quarter or the last thirty seconds of the game. Silver also claimed that the package would attract gamblers who are only interested in the part of the game that they have placed their money on (Rovell). The reduced prices will, therefore, increase the number of viewers, thus benefiting the NBA.
Aside from the low rates, Silver plans to include more analytics, innovations, and graphics in the broadcasting. The NBA has installed optical player tracking systems in its arenas and offers a vision of how the spectrum could improve a viewer’s experience by including statistics and fantasy above every player. At the top of the innovations is the inclusion of biometric data on a viewer’s screen, which will display a player’s information live from wearable devices. The wearable devices are used to track a player's performance by providing information such as fatigue, distance ran, number of jumps, cardiovascular exertion, and many others. Currently, these wearable devices are only used for training and not in the actual NBA matches. Nonetheless, there are various benefits that can be brought about by the wearable devices.
The devices have proven effective in offering important player data in ...
