Women's Rights and Environmental Protection
There is an intersection between women's rights and environmental protection. The Women's Environment & Development Organization (WEDO) recognizes this connection since the effective protection of the environment requires the protection of women's rights. Equally, if women's rights need to be protected, it is imperative to protect the environment (WEDO). As a social construct, gender shapes the roles, attributes, prospects, rights, and capacities of both men and women globally. While climate change impacts humans, women tend to be affected differently. They have limited access to resources, limited mobility, less voice to influence decisions and policy formulation, and are more restricted from enjoying their rights. Women are also frequently involved in informal sectors or working in households to maintain agricultural lands and foster agricultural education and natural resource management, thus making them the best target in suggesting solutions to climate change's global challenges. However, according to WEDO, women have continued to be disproportionately affected by poverty, governance, and land ownership. Without seeking innovative climate change programs spearheaded by women, the world will continue to experience serious challenges, including crop failure, fuel shortage, water scarcity, natural disasters, diseases, domestic and international conflicts, and forced migration.
