Sociological Theorists and their Ideas – Option One
I was minding my own business, eyeing the stale, unsavory piece of unfinished bratwurst on my tray when two wise-looking men came in. Both carried two full mugs of coffee, judging from the strong earthy smell that came pouring in. One man’s hair was unkempt and bush, matched by an equally messy beard white with age, his face showing wrinkles deepened through the years of thinking and writing. The other seemed younger, more conservative looking, opting for a neater, more face-framing cut. They sat the table right next to us.
I did not recognize them right away, of course. I had always been bad at recognizing faces. My friend across the table stared at them and then at me. He mouthed, “Hey! Hey! Do you recognize them?”
I shook my head.
“It’s Karl Marx and Georg Simmel! Who would have thought!” He exclaimed, his voice high with excitement.
I put my hand on my lips to hush him, as the two men started talking.
“Georg,” said the man with the snow-white beard, “Man, I believe, unfortunately, has not been aware of his true needs. He lives in a distorted reality parading as one brought up by rationality, a false consciousness even if you may allow me to say.”
“Alienation, you mean?” Georg answered. He reached into his pocket to take out a cigarette. He looks around, realizing that he is in a cafeteria full of impressionable children. He puts back the cigarette.
“Yes, exactly,” said Karl. He is alienated from his work and his nature, finding no fulfillment, always miserable. Without a chance to care for his well-being, his mental and physical energies are debased – exhausted.”
Georg smiles and probes further, “What do you think of the future, Karl?”
